Social Justice and Education: Open Education Network Watch Party and Discussion

Description

Join colleagues from VCU and across the commonwealth for an afternoon of learning and discussion on the relationship between social justice and open education.

VCU Libraries, VCU CTLE and The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA),  will host a watch party for the 2022 Open Education Network (OEN) Summit. The OEN Summit is an opportunity for educators to connect with others, learn about open education strategies, share expertise  and explore challenges in a collaborative environment.

This watch party will stream two sessions focused on social justice and open education and offer time for reflection and discussion between the sessions.

Attendees are welcome to drop-in as they wish. Snacks will be provided and attendees are welcome to bring their lunches.  Registration is encouraged to assist with planning but is not required.

Agenda:

Noon-1:15pm: “Creating a Socially Just Open Education,” a presentation by Jasmine Roberts-Crews, lecturer in the School of Communication at The Ohio State University and the OEN’s first Faculty Fellow

About Open Education

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials that are free to access online and shared with open licenses that allow for unrestricted use, retention, sharing and editing by faculty and students. OER can be any type of teaching or learning materials, including textbooks, images, videos, slide decks, assessments, syllabi, and whole courses. Open Education is the greater practice of those practices, resources, and tools which support the free sharing and access to education.

VCU Libraries’ Open and Affordable Course Content Initiative provides education on open education and textbook affordability and direct support for the adoption, customization and creation of open educational resources, including managing the Affordable Course Content Awards. To learn more or explore the possibility of using or creating OER, visit the initiative’s website or contact Open Educational Resources Librarian Jessica Kirschner at kirschnerj2@vcu.edu.
