Contest for artwork for the Cabell Screen carries $500 prize

September 20, 2017

The Cabell Screen at James Branch Cabell Library is seeking short videos or  animations designed to showcase and promote the Annual Friends of VCU Libraries Book Sale. Thousands of donated books, CDs, comic books and other pieces of printed matter are sold each year at the annual book sale, which raises money for library programs and student-run community service projects. The sale is jointly organized by the Friend of VCU Libraries and the VCU Emerging Leaders Program.

The selected animation will be shown on the Cabell Screen in October and the artist will receive  a $500 prize. The committee seeks a work of art that reflects the creative energy of VCU rather than a traditional advertising-style message. VCU students, faculty, staff and alumni artists are invited to submit up to three works per person for consideration. Work will be selected by the Cabell Screen Committee and the Friends of VCU Libraries.

Submissions must meet these specifications:

  • Literary, book or text themed using any animation medium: stop-motion, hand drawn, 3D animation, etc
  • Duration between 15 seconds to two minutes or a five-second minimum animated loop that continuously loops for 15 seconds or longer
  • At some point, includes the phrase “Book Sale” and the url “go.vcu.edu/books
  • Fits the specific aspect ratio of the screen:
    • Smallest resolution accepted is 350 pixels x 320 pixels (vertical x horizontal) at 300 dpi
    • Largest resolution accepted is 1750 pixels x 1600 pixels (vertical x horizontal) at 300 dpi
  • Submitted as a .mp4 file, .mov file or .avi file
  • The screen is a visual medium only: there is no sound. Work that does not fit the aspect ratio will not be considered.

Deadline: Submissions should be emailed to cabellscreen@vcu.edu by October 15 at 11:59 p.m.
