Books being treated and full inspection planned after bed bug sighting

January 23, 2023

Following a sighting last week of one bedbug in one book from the third floor of James Branch Cabell Library, actions taken and scheduled are:

–The university’s pest control company, Orkin Pest Control, has completed a chemical treatment of the area and empty shelving where the book was stored. The area will remain blocked off until 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24.

–Orkin Pest Control has removed from the library all books within 10 feet of the affected volume and is heat treating them–the most effective way to kill bed bugs and their eggs. The books will be returned to the library this week and reshelved.

– In an abundance of caution, a full canine inspection of all public areas of Cabell Library will take place Thursday night to check for any sign of other bedbugs. This inspection will be in the late night and overnight hours and will not disturb library users.
