Ty Phelps is the Cabell First Novelist Award Community Liaison. As a graduate student in VCU's MFA in Creative Writing program, he served in 2021-22 as the Cabell Fellow, a graduate student position focused on running the award. 

His current work involves identifying community members to read eligible titles for the year's award, collaborating with the Cabell Fellow to get books to readers, and participating in the overall work of the award and helping increase its visibility.

Phelps brings to the position experience teaching fiction, composition and English. He is well-connected to the Central Virginia literary community. His publications include fiction, nonfiction, poetry, reviews and interviews.
